By MBEP Transportation Program
As we all experience every day, our region (Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties) is connected by a limited series of highways and main arteries, and as a result suffers from a great deal of traffic congestion. Limiting single driver car trips is one way to reduce this congestion.
Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) is investing in getting our region the information, incentives, and encouragement to make different choices about travel behavior.
MBEP is working with our over 80 members to encourage “smart commuting” through the MBEP Mobility Platform, a framework that helps us all get out of our cars by reducing, re-timing, re-routing and re-moding our travel around the region. Utilizing the varied components of MBEP’s Mobility Platform, we can re-think how we move around the region and build on the good work our transportation agencies are doing.

And great things are already happening that are transforming the world of transportation. Services like Jump Bikes, Zip Cars, e-scooters, Uber, and Lyft weren't options even a few years ago. Our transportation agencies are building on this momentum and implementing new innovative tools.
Though a partnership between the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC) and RideAmigos, they’ve created GO831, a commuter platform and user-friendly mobile application that is a great planning tool for employers and their employees. There is a similar planning tool in Santa Cruz County, Cruz511, that not only provides traffic information, but also alternate modes of transportation, rideshare options and bike maps. All our transportation partners are working on new projects and programs, and we look forward to sharing more good news in the coming months.

May is Bike Month: Time to Get on Your Bikes and Ride!

MBEP member Ecology Action's annual Bike Month campaign kicks off May 1 with events that are bigger and bolder than ever. Santa Cruz County businesses can help lead and inspire change by being a part of it. To help the community’s mission of reducing greenhouse gas emissions – through health, fun and low-cost transportation, this year's Bike Month features incentives such as a $7,500 cash prize, a Gazelle ebike, employer prizes, and more. In addition to community favorites like Bike to Work + School, Ecology Action is rolling out a Bike Month Challenge and a whole month of awesome bike events to inspire both beginning and experienced bike commuters.
